John SCHEID

John Scheid is a Historian and an Archeologist, specialist of Ancient Rome, born 1946 in Luxembourg. Between 1974-1977, he was a member of the French School in Rome, and then an assistant lecturer of Roman History at the University of Lille (1977-1983).

He has been Director of Studies at the Religious Sciences Section of the École Pratique des Hautes Études (chair : Religions of Rome), between 1983-2001, until he was appointed as a Professor at the Collège de France, Chair for Religion, institutions and Society in Ancient Rome, 2001–2016.

He has led several Archaeological excavations, in particular at La Magliana (1975-1988; 1997-1998), and Jebel Oust, Tunisia (2000-2016), and has taken part in the Advisory committee for archaeological research abroad (1984-1992 ; 2010-2016). He realized two fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (fall terms 1985 and 1993)

He also has been a foreign Expert in two Schwerpunktsprogramme of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (1993-1999; 2002-2007), and a member of the Superior council for research and innovation (Luxembourg, 2008-2014).
