Nancy BERTHIER

Deputy Director

Nancy Berthier, professor of visual arts at the Sorbonne, became the first woman to take up the directorship of Casa de Velázquez in January 2022.

She has also successively directed the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur les mondes ibériques contemporains (CRIMIC) and the Institut d'études hispaniques (IEH) at the Sorbonne. Alongside these institutional responsibilities, she has always pursued her research activities.

A specialist in the dialogue between the visual arts and history, image and memory, her research focuses on political and territorial imaginaries in the contemporary contexts of the Iberian and Ibero-American worlds. She wrote her doctoral thesis on Franco's propaganda films, which was her first publication. She went on to study the links between cinema and propaganda in both Spain and Cuba.

Her most recent publications include Los memes: Por la comprensión de un fenómeno de nuestro tiempo (2022, Instituto Universitario del Cine Español UC3M and Ocho y Medio Libros de Cine), co-authored with Manuel Palacio, and Noticiero ICAIC: memoria del mundo.30 años de periodismo cinematográfico en Cuba (Hurón Azul, 2023).
