François Héran is a professor at the Collège de France, on the "Migrations et sociétés" chair.

Graduated from the École normale supérieure (1972-1976), he is an associate professor of philosophy. He holds a thesis in anthropology from the École des Hautes études en sciences sociales and a state doctorate from the Université Paris-Descartes. After his stays at Casa de Velázquez (1976-1979) and at the French Institute of Andean Studies (1979-1980), he joined the Institut national d'études démographiques (INED) and the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques (INSEE) to conduct surveys on sociability, couple building, family educational efforts, language transmission and immigration.

He headed INED for more than ten years (1999-2009) and chaired the European Association for Population Studies (2008-2012).

He recently published Avec l’immigration. Mesurer, débattre, agir. (Paris, La Découverte, 2017), « De la "crise des migrants" à la crise de l’Europe : un éclairage démographique » (in Patrick Boucheron (dir.), Migrations, réfugiés, exil, Paris, Odile Jacob, 2017, pp. 239-260) et Parlons immigration en 30 questions (Paris, La Documentation française, 2e éd. refondue, 2016).
