Silvia Serrano

Silvia Serrano is a Professor at Sorbonne University. She holds a Ph.D. from the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO) and a Habilitation à diriger des recherches in Political Science from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris. From 2020 to 2023, she served as Vice-Chancellor of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. She has been in charge of international or French research programs such as « Groupement de recherches » GDRUS, Empire russe, URSS, monde post-soviétique (CNRS, GDR 2064) ; FP7 European project “Cascade” Exploring the Security-Democracy Nexus in the Caucasus, (SSH.2013.4.1-1), by the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH, Paris); Agence Nationale de la Recherche’ project “Caucasus and Central Asia, Another South?” (program « Les Suds aujourd’hui »).
Her research focuses on the political sociology of the Post-soviet States: Conflicts and violence; Nationalism and the politics of identity; Religion, Economics and Politics. Her current work explores the sociology of the market for religious goods and services in the Russian Federation and Central Asia.
She is the author of numerous publicartions, among others ; Orthodoxie et politique en Géorgie postsoviétique: Karthala, collection Meydan, 2018; Géorgie.
