Designing Constitutions Amidst Conflict in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Latin America
Natalia Sobrevilla Perea est titulaire d'un doctorat de l'Université de Londres (2005) et d'un diplôme de l'Université pontificale catholique du Pérou (1996). Elle a publié plus d'une douzaine d'ouvrages sur l'histoire du Pérou et de l'Amérique latine, aussi bien en anglais qu'en espagnol. Cambridge University Press a publié son dernier ouvrage en 2025 ; celui-ci porte sur l'armée et la formation de l'État au Pérou au XIXe siècle. Elle a été professeure invitée à Yale et à l'Université libre de Berlin et a bénéficié de bourses de recherche de la John Carter Brown Library, de la British Library, de la British Academy, du Leverhulme Trust et de la Fondation Humboldt. Entre 2015 et 2018, elle a dirigé un groupe de recherche consacré à la compréhension du concept de nation durant les guerres d'indépendance. Elle a collaboré à la création du centre de documentation du *Lugar de la Memoria* (Lieu de mémoire) au Pérou et a piloté la numérisation de journaux du XIXe siècle avec le soutien de la British Library — qui a également financé la numérisation d'une partie du fonds des archives agraires ; elle participe par ailleurs à la campagne de défense des Archives générales de la nation. Elle a réalisé deux documentaires sur l'époque de l'indépendance ainsi qu'un court-métrage imaginant l'arrivée de Flora Tristán au port d'Islay. De 2007 à 2024, elle a enseigné à l'Université du Kent, au Royaume-Uni, où elle a occupé la chaire d'histoire de l'Amérique latine ; elle est actuellement chercheuse à l'Institut Riva-Agüero. En 2026, elle rejoindra le Kellogg Institute de l'Université de Notre Dame, aux États-Unis.
Projet de recherche
The civil wars that ravaged Latin America at mid-century—ranging from the War of the Reform in Mexico to the overthrow of Juan Manuel de Rosas in the Río de la Plata, as well as conflicts in New Granada and Peru—paved the way for new constitutional arrangements aimed at establishing more democratic institutions. However, a conservative backlash ensued, and the conflict persisted. This project compares these upheavals in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru, focusing on their causes, progression, and consequences. The goal is to identify patterns that shed light on how democratic institutions evolved and how this process shaped the region's development. I argue that, while the political structures existing or being established at the time might not necessarily align with what we would consider democratic today, it is essential to better understand how they emerged from conflict and how they sought to implement constitutional changes.
