Urban Space and Access to Healthcare for the Trans Population in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area and Madrid

Anahí Farji Neer holds a PhD in Social Sciences, a Master's degree in Social Science Research, and a BA in Sociology from the Universidad de Buenos Aires. She is an Associate Researcher at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), based at the Instituto de Estudios Sociales en Contextos de Desigualdades (IESCODE-UNPAZ).

She is the author of Sentidos en disputa sobre los cuerpos trans: los discursos médicos, judiciales, activistas y parlamentarios en Argentina (1966–2015) (Teseo, 2020), which offers a systematic analysis of the debates, historical antecedents, and implications of Argentina's Gender Identity Law.

Her research examines transformations in healthcare arising from the demands of travesti and trans activism in Argentina. Her work is situated within the fields of the sociology of health and sexuality studies. She has led research projects focusing on travesti and trans people's access to healthcare and education and has published extensively in national and international academic journals.

Among trans people, movement through urban space has historically been marked by violence and criminalization and, consequently, has been restricted to specific urban areas. The project entitled "Urban Space and Access to Healthcare for the Trans Population in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area and Madrid" aims to describe and analyze the ways in which the modes of urban circulation of the trans population shape their access to health institutions in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area and the city of Madrid during the period 2012–2026. The comparative approach will make it possible to examine how the differing forms of urban organization and health systems, together with the distinctive configurations of trans activism in each context, shape the strategies through which the trans population accesses healthcare. The research seeks to contribute to the development of an analytical perspective for examining the spatial dimension of the trans population's access to health institutions in urban settings.
