Sociology of a 'Nature-Based Solution': Emergence and Circulation of Siembra y Cosecha de Agua Systems in Spain and the Andes

Sociologist and political scientist. His research focuses on the challenges of economic and environmental development, particularly in the Andean countries. He holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Strasbourg (2023, supervised by Vincent Dubois) and spent two years (2024-2026) as a postdoctoral researcher at the Casa de Velázquez. Previously, between 2017 and 2020, he coordinated the Andean hub of the Institut des Amériques in Lima, and taught (as ATER) at Sciences Po Strasbourg, and later as a contractual lecturer at the University of Haute-Alsace. He is currently an associate researcher at the French Institute for Andean Studies (IFEA), a member of the Scientific Council of the Institut des Amériques, and a board member of the French Sociological Association's economic sociology research network (RT12).

This research project analyzes the design, circulation, and uses of Siembra y Cosecha de Agua (SyCA) schemes — ancestral water management techniques today promoted as "nature-based solutions" (NBS). Through a comparative approach between Spain and Peru — two territories where water management techniques emerged, with local specificities and differences, that are today grouped under the SyCA category — the project analyzes the politico-administrative, territorial, and socio-productive conditions that enable their re-emergence and adaptation, or that limit their reach. Moreover, these schemes now lie at the heart of reinforced circulations between Andean countries and Spain, and make it possible to examine the new forms taken by international development cooperation around NBS. The methodology combines documentary analysis, interviews, and fieldwork observation with a quantitative approach (prosopography, network analysis, multiple correspondence analysis) designed to objectify the configurations of actors involved, to understand how these schemes are concretely implemented and by which types of actors, and to identify any water-use conflicts they generate.
