Biography

Ivanna Margarucci is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Tarapacá, Chile (FONDECYT Postdoctoral Project N° 3230006) and the Center for Research and Documentation on the Left-Wing Cultures (CeDInCI), Argentina. She specializes in the social, cultural and intellectual history of the Andean region of South America, with a focus on Bolivia, Chile, Peru and northern Argentina in the first half of the 20th century. Her research topics are concerned with the left-wing currents (especially anarchism) and its links with the workers' and indigenous peasants' movements, addressed from a regional and transnational perspective.

She holds a PhD in History from the University of Buenos Aires, where she was also a professor. She has published articles in academic journals in Latin America and Europe, as well as a book and several book chapters. She has been a fellow of CONICET, Argentina, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, CEDLA, the Netherlands, the Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut in Berlin and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, Germany, among others.

Research project

This research project examines the history and geography of Spanish Republican exile in Bolivia, as a problem that is marginal or absent in the historiography of exile and Bolivian historiography. During and after the Second World War, a contingent of Spanish Republican exiles arrived in the Andean-Amazonian country. Still under discussion, the number of the exiles may have been reduced compared to other national cases such as Mexico or Argentina, but its impact between the 1940s and 1960s was twofold: both political and cultural.

The proposal aims to continue with the construction of a biblio-hemerographic and archival corpus in archives and libraries in Spain that preserve documentation relating to the Spanish, but also Bolivian, itinerary of the exiles. Using a transdisciplinary, comparative, connected and transnational methodology, I intend to make a first approach to the names, biographies, networks, political and cultural impact and the matrix of thought of the Spanish Republican exiles in Bolivia.
