URBS PROCURATORUM: RELIGIOUS PROCURATORS AND CULTURAL CIRCULATION IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY MADRID

Ramón Ojeda Corzo is a historian specializing in the cultural and religious history of the early modern Iberian worlds. He earned his B.A. in History from the University of Seville and his M.A. in the Hispanic Monarchy, as well as his Ph.D. in History and Archaeology, from the Complutense University of Madrid. His research focuses on the circulation of people, knowledge, and objects across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with  particular attention to religious procurators as cultural brokers. He has been a visiting researcher at Roma Tre University, the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris, and the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon. He has published extensively and has presented his research at numerous national and international conferences and seminars. He currently participates in the IBERCOSMOPOLIS research project, led by Federico Palomo and Fernando Bouza. 

The project explores the role of religious procurators as cultural brokers in the global circulation of knowledge, objects, and images during the seventeenth century. While recent scholarship has emphasized the connections linking Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa, the human infrastructures that enabled these exchanges remain insufficiently understood. Acting on behalf of religious orders, procurators transported books, manuscripts, relics, devotional objects, and information between missionary territories and Europe's principal political and religious centers. Through the analysis of archival documentation, manuscript and printed sources, together with material culture and visual evidence, the research reconstructs these networks of circulation by taking Habsburg Madrid as its principal observatory. The project argues that religious procurators  constituted a key infrastructure for the production and transmission of knowledge on a global scale, making Madrid a strategic hub of cultural, political, and religious exchange across the Iberian monarchies.
