Comics in all its facets

Virginie Giuliana is Professor of Spanish Graphic Literature in the Hispanic Studies division of Université Clermont Auvergne (France) and a member of the Centre de Recherches sur les Littératures et la Sociopoétique (CELIS – UR 4280). She holds a PhD in Hispanic Philology and Art History from Université Lumière Lyon 2 (France) and the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland).

Between 2023 and 2025, she led the European project iCOn-MICs (COST Action 19119), “Investigation on Comics and Graphic Novels from the Iberian Cultural Area” (2020–2025) (https://iconmics.hypotheses.org). She is the driving force behind and Action Chair of the European COST Action COS-MICs, “Comics and Sciences through Multidisciplinary Investigation and Collaboration” (CA24160, 2025–2029) (https://cosmics.hypotheses.org). She also co-directs the CALC 2 project, “Comics, Archive and Critical Literature: Historiography of Graphic Narrative (1958–1992)” (EHEHI – Casa de Velázquez, 2025–2028) (www.calce.hypotheses.org).

Her research focuses on comics and related arts, Art History, museography, as well as contemporary Spanish literature and the visual arts. She also studies the relationship between text and image from the nineteenth century to the present day, from an intermedial and transmedial perspective. She is the author of the monograph El lugar de las musas. Nuevos retos museográficos en torno a la pintura y el cómic en España (1971–2023), Grafikalismos, University of León, 2026.

My work is structured around two complementary areas. The first centers on research project engineering and researcher support, which forms the core of my current role. I assist researchers in developing interdisciplinary and international initiatives—guiding them through proposal design, research question refinement, partnership building, and funding strategies. This work draws directly on my background in comics studies and my leadership experience as a project chair, creating opportunities to forge new collaborations and explore fresh research avenues. The second area focuses on my independent research into the representation of women and ageing in comics, as well as the integration of graphic narratives into museums and cultural institutions. As comics gain widespread recognition as cultural heritage, my work explores how they are preserved, classified, and exhibited, analizing museums not just as sites of conservation, but as spaces for critically examining and reinterpreting societal values, institutional spaces that can serve as platforms to challenge and contribute to transform cultural perceptions of gender, age, and heritage in comics.
