For more than a century, the Casa de Velázquez has played a fundamental role in archaeological research (la Casa de Velázquez desempeña un papel fundamental) in the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. Through excavations, field missions, and collective projects, the institution has contributed to the development of a vast network of scientific collaborations between France, Spain, and the Maghreb, fostering the exchange of knowledge, methods, and experiences.
This 2026 edition of the European Archaeology Days aims to reflect on the importance of international cooperation in archaeological sciences and how these networks contribute today to the advancement of research, heritage protection, and the dissemination of knowledge. Throughout these three days, marked by three events open to the public, the goal will be to highlight these networking dynamics, as well as to take stock of the current status of the sites supported by the Casa de Velázquez.
The institutional opening of the EAD 2026 will be marked by the official presentation of the insignia of the Order of Academic Palms to Professor Dirce Marzoli, director of the German Archaeological Institute of Madrid from 2004 to 2023. This French decoration, awarded through the Casa de Velázquez and the Embassy of France in Madrid, is intended to be both a symbol of recognition for a remarkable career and a testament to the strong bonds uniting European countries in the development and support of archaeological sciences.
