Aurélien Montel is a historian of medieval Islam specializing in the Islamic West, al-Andalus, and the Maghreb. In 2019, he defended his doctoral dissertation at Université Lumière Lyon 2, entitled Al-Andalus et le Maghreb à l’époque des Omeyyades de Cordoue : réseaux d’échanges et ambitions impériales (IXe-XIe siècles). Since 2023, he has been a maître de conférences in Medieval History at Université Toulouse – Jean Jaurès and a member of the FRAMESPA research laboratory.

His research focuses particularly on mobility, scholarly networks, and the historical geography of the medieval Islamic West. He is therefore the founder of the international research collective LibMed, devoted to the study of medieval Libya. In 2026, he published La rive d’en face. Al-Andalus et le Maghreb à l’époque des Omeyyades de Cordoue (IIe/VIIIe-Ve/XIe siècle) (Bibliothèque de la Casa de Velázquez, 94).

After having been a scientific member of the Casa de Velázquez in 2017–2018, he has served, since September 2026, as Director of Scientific Studies in the Ancient and Medieval History section.
