Guillaume HANOTIN
Guillaume Hanotin has been Director of Modern, Contemporary and Present-Day Studies at the Casa de Velázquez since September 1, 2026. A Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at Université Bordeaux Montaigne, he specializes in the history of international relations and early modern Spain. His research focuses on diplomatic and commercial relations between France and Spain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In particular, he has studied the alliances between the French and Spanish monarchies within a dynastic framework.
A former member of the scientific section of the Casa de Velázquez (EHEHI), he completed his habilitation to supervise research on the asiento de Negros of the Royal Guinea Company. His research shows how the concession of the slave trade in Spanish America was at the heart of diplomatic relations throughout the eighteenth century, and how the implementation of this contract gave rise to a form of lobbying by mercantile elites in both France and Spain.
