Reception of Greek and Arabic veterinary medicine in Al-Andalus: contribution to the investigation of the veterinary compendium of the Kitab al-filaha by Ibn al-'Awwam (12th century)

Emmanuel Beaujard is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher of the «Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique » (F.R.S.-FNRS) in Belgium. He holds a PhD in Languages, Literatures and Translation Studies from the University of Louvain (UCLouvain, 2025). His research focuses on ancient veterinary literature, in particular the critical edition and commentary of the Greek hippiatric treatises. He is also interested in the transmission and reception of Greek veterinary medicine in Byzantium and in the Arabic world.

During his stay in Madrid, Emmanuel Beaujard will work on the chapters of the agronomical treatise (Kitab al-filaha) by the Sevillian author Ibn al-’Awwam (12th century) devoted to husbandry and cattle medicine. In addition to studying the Greek and Arabic sources of this landmark work of agronomy in al-Andalus, his research will concentrate on establishing the Arabic text and on interpreting the hippiatric lexicon of Ibn al-’Awwam.
