Transition to Democracy in Argentina and Spain: Experiences in Restoring Rights, Transnational Dialogues, and Contextual Differences
Marisa Moroni holds a PhD in History from the University of Seville and is a researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), working at the Institute of Historical and Social Studies of La Pampa (IEHSOLP) at the National University of La Pampa (UNLPam). She is the director of the Institute of Socio-Historical Studies at the Faculty of Human Sciences of the UNLPam and serves as Full Professor of Institutional History and Associate Professor of Contemporary Argentine History. She is the author and co-editor of books, chapters, and peer-reviewed articles on topics related to the history of justice in non-centralised spaces. Her current research focuses on the transition to democracy in Argentina, mainly from the perspective of transitional justice, the restoration of rights and memory policies at the subnational level. In this vein, she directs research and outreach projects, co-directs the Network for Socio-Historical Studies on Democracy (RESHIDE), and coordinates the UNLPam Node of the Centre for Socio-Historical Studies on Justice, Crime, and Punishment in Latin America.
Research project
This project we focus on transitional justice processes in Argentina and Spain to analyze differences, continuities, and changes in managing the “traumatic past” in both countries. We aim to explore the circulation and exchange of knowledge, experiences, and practices related to the design and implementation of state policies for restoring rights. Our goal is to contribute to the academic and public debate on processes of historical memory and legal truth. Examining Argentina's transitional experience in relation to the Spanish model will allow us to better understand the strategies and methods employed during the democratic reconstruction process to modify, adapt, or repeal the legal and institutional framework of the preceding authoritarian regime. First, we aim to: 1) Study the institutional projects and the legal-constitutional regulatory framework of the democratic transition in Argentina and Spain; 2) identify transitional justice policies and rights restoration initiatives, with a focus on the circulation of experiences and transnational exchanges. Second, we propose to: 3) Investigate Spain’s experience in reconstructing the legal, constitutional, and institutional framework of the dictatorship, and its positioning in political and academic contexts as a “model applicable” to other regions.
