This seminar proposes avenues for exploring the connection between language and citizenship in the medieval city. Fifteenth-century Barcelona offers an exceptional laboratory for this purpose. As a powerful Mediterranean commercial hub, Barcelona developed systems to control the privilege of citizenship granted by its monarchs. In doing so, it generated complex records that allow for reflection on the ambiguities of a citizenship valued as a privileged legal status, yet experienced as a bond of union within the urban community. Exploring the potential of linguistic analysis in the study of pre-modern citizenship will lead us, on this occasion, to analyze the evidentiary value of the words of Barcelona’s inhabitants in the formal recognition of their fellow citizens' belonging.
