Florida—the first permanent settlement in what is now the United States under Spanish rule since 1565—represented a true crossroads regarding the possible models of colonial occupation in the Americas. The rivalry between France and Spain over the occupation of that strategic territory jeopardized the peace between the two kingdoms, while simultaneously opening an opportunity for England to deploy its own overseas campaigns. This presentation will investigate the centrality of Florida within the diplomatic negotiations between Spain, France, and England during the 1560s, alongside the various strategies of colonial occupation that helped shape the global order of the early modern period.
