The Printed Production of the Colegio Imperial de Madrid: Formation and Circulation of Religious and Scholarly Knowledge in the Early Modern Era (1603–1700)
Claire Bouvier is Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at CY Cergy Paris Université and a member of the Héritages research unit (UMR 9022). She holds the agrégation in Spanish and she is a former Scientific Member of the School of Hispanic and Iberian Studies (EHEHI–Casa de Velázquez). She earned her PhD from the University of Lille with a dissertation entitled “Pedro de Ribadeneyra, S.J. (1526–1611) and the Emergence of the Ministry of Writing in the Society of Jesus”. Her research focuses on written culture and the uses of print in early modern Spain, with particular attention to the Society of Jesus. At the intersection of book history, social history and religious history, she examines the production, circulation and reception of printed works. Combining textual and visual analysis, material bibliography and archival research, her work sheds light on the making of religious authorship, editorial practices and the networks that structured the circulation of knowledge.
At MIAS, she is developing a project on the printed output of the Jesuit Imperial College of Madrid, one of the leading intellectual centres of seventeenth-century Catholic Europe. The project offers the first systematic study of the institution's publications between 1603 and 1700, addressing a major gap in the history of religious and intellectual print culture in early modern Europe. Drawing on material bibliography, archival sources and the digital humanities, it adopts an interdisciplinary approach at the intersection of book history, social history, economic history and the history of cultural circulation. By reconstructing editorial strategies, production networks and the material conditions of printed works, the project highlights the central role of the Imperial College in the intellectual exchanges of early modern Europe.
